They say you don't need fancy professional camera gear to take great photos - it's all about the person behind the lens.
I call bullsh*t!
Don't get me wrong, the person behind the lens is incredibly important. She needs a vision for what to capture and she needs to be able to make that vision happen – both ensuring the right moments happen in front of the camera and that she is ready and able to capture them with the right angles, perspectives and use of light. She needs the expertise to use the camera she has in her hands. She needs that proverbial ‘eye’. Without those, she will NOT take great photos.
Also, one CAN take incredible photos with basic camera gear - when the stars align. When the conditions are perfect, the stopwatch is off, and the models are predictable and take direction well, basic gear is all you need. Or maybe you can get a lucky shot. Or a whole bunch of lucky shots.
But when you are a Professional Family Portrait Photographer, especially working on-location and often outside with natural light, it’s a little different! I simply can’t always shoot in perfect conditions with pliable models and predictable circumstances every time (or maybe even ever!).
While I guide you towards the right times of days, times of year and some of the most beautiful family photo locations to create the best images, there are always variables beyond our control.
LIGHT is probably the biggest factor that professional gear helps with. When the natural light is too dark or too bright or coming from the ‘wrong’ direction, I rely on my camera settings and lighting gear to help deal. A higher-end camera can better deal with low light and high contrast, and it lets me both capture motion better and ensure my images are sharply in focus. In non-ideal lighting conditions, professional gear helps you STILL create great photos.
FOCUS and MOTION capture also benefit hugely from having higher end gear. When kids are running around in unpredictable ways (part of EVERY session with someone under the age of about 10!), the higher auto-focus speeds, the breadth of focus grid points, the focusing modes, the burst speeds and the speed with which images ‘save’ to memory on top-end gear is critical to capturing perfect images of the action. Basic gear simply can’t keep up. And let’s face it, even a simply posed family portrait involving a toddler involves action!
Finally, let’s talk about TIME. Children (and their parents!!) have a Portrait Session 'expiry time', so you better be sure that your beautiful images are captured relatively quickly in each moment so we can move on to the next moment! There is no time to worry about perfecting the conditions that lesser gear needs to create technically sound images.
So yes, by all means, as they say, “the best camera is the one in your hands”! But when it comes to investing the time, energy and funds into a beautiful heirloom family portrait session, be sure your professional photographer is holding professional gear in their hands and that they know how to use it!
When you are safe with that knowledge, you only need to worry about having fun!
